Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE)
Specialist dietary support for children with Eosinophilic Oesophagitis
Receiving a diagnosis of Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE) can feel overwhelming. You may have questions about elimination diets, repeat endoscopies, nutritional deficiencies and how you're going to manage such significant dietary changes for your child.
The good news is that you don't have to navigate it alone.
At Beam Dietitians, we specialise in paediatric gastroenterology and have extensive NHS experience supporting children with EoE. We work closely with families to ensure children receive all the nutrition they need while managing elimination diets safely and confidently.
Whether your child has recently been diagnosed or you've been living with EoE for some time, we're here to provide practical, evidence-based support every step of the way.
What is Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE)?
Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the oesophagus (food pipe).
In children with EoE, a type of white blood cell called an eosinophil builds up in the lining of the oesophagus, causing inflammation.
Over time, this inflammation can make swallowing difficult and, if left untreated, may lead to narrowing (strictures) of the oesophagus.
Although food triggers are common, EoE is not the same as a typical food allergy, and diagnosis and treatment are different.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms often vary depending on a child's age.
Babies and young children
Feeding difficulties
Food refusal
Reflux that doesn't improve
Vomiting
Poor weight gain
Irritability during meals
Slow eating
Older children and teenagers
Difficulty swallowing
Food sticking in the throat
Drinking lots with meals to help food go down
Chest discomfort
Abdominal pain
Avoiding certain textures
Eating very slowly
Weight loss or poor growth
Many children adapt their eating habits without realising it, so symptoms can sometimes be overlooked for months or even years.
How is EoE diagnosed?
Unlike many food allergies, EoE cannot be diagnosed using allergy tests alone.
Diagnosis is made using:
Clinical history
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
Biopsies taken from the oesophagus
Your child's gastroenterology team will use these results to confirm the diagnosis and monitor how well treatment is working.
Because symptoms don't always reflect how much inflammation is present, repeat endoscopies are often needed to assess whether treatment has been successful.
How is EoE treated?
Treatment usually involves one or more of the following:
Dietary management
Many children improve by removing foods that trigger inflammation.
Medication
Some children require medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or swallowed topical corticosteroids.
Ongoing monitoring
Repeat endoscopies are often required to check whether inflammation has improved.
Your gastroenterology team will recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for your child.
The role of diet in EoE
Dietary management is one of the most effective treatments for many children with EoE.
The aim is to identify foods that are triggering inflammation while maintaining a nutritionally balanced diet.
Depending on your child's individual circumstances, dietary treatment may include:
One-food elimination diets
Two-food elimination diets
Four-food elimination diets
Six-food elimination diets
Step-up elimination approaches
Targeted elimination where appropriate
Not every child requires the same dietary approach.
We'll work closely with your gastroenterology team to develop the most appropriate plan for your child.
Why seeing a specialist paediatric dietitian matters
Eliminating multiple foods without appropriate support can increase the risk of:
Poor growth
Nutritional deficiencies
Limited dietary variety
Feeding difficulties
Anxiety around food
Family stress
Our role is to minimise these risks while ensuring dietary treatment remains practical and nutritionally complete.
We'll help you:
Plan balanced meals
Identify suitable alternatives
Read food labels
Prevent nutritional deficiencies
Support healthy growth
Navigate nursery, school and social occasions
Reintroduce foods safely when appropriate
Food reintroduction
One of the most important stages of EoE management is identifying which foods trigger inflammation.
After a period of elimination and repeat endoscopy, foods are often reintroduced gradually under the guidance of your healthcare team.
We'll support you through every stage by helping you:
Plan food reintroductions
Maintain nutritional balance
Reduce anxiety around changing diets
Monitor dietary variety
Support your child's confidence around food
What to expect during your appointment
We'll carry out a detailed assessment, including:
Medical history
Endoscopy results (where available)
Growth
Current diet
Feeding behaviours
Previous elimination diets
Food allergies
Nutritional intake
Family concerns
Your goals
Following your consultation, you'll receive a personalised nutrition plan designed specifically for your child's treatment stage.
We'll also provide ongoing support as your child's diet changes over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is EoE the same as a food allergy?
No. Although foods often trigger inflammation in EoE, it is a different condition from immediate food allergies. Allergy tests alone cannot diagnose EoE or reliably identify trigger foods.
Will my child have to avoid foods forever?
Not necessarily. Many children are able to reintroduce foods over time under the guidance of their gastroenterology team. The goal is to identify the smallest number of foods that need to be avoided while maintaining good disease control.
Can my child still grow normally?
Yes. With careful dietary planning and regular monitoring, most children can continue to grow and develop well while managing EoE.
Why does my child need repeat endoscopies?
Symptoms don't always reflect the amount of inflammation in the oesophagus. Repeat endoscopies help your healthcare team assess whether treatment is working and guide decisions about food reintroduction.
Can you work with my child's consultant?
Absolutely. We regularly work alongside paediatric gastroenterologists, allergy teams, GPs and other healthcare professionals to ensure children receive coordinated, evidence-based care.
